Missouri’s medical marijuana program was approved by voters with the passing of Amendment 2 in November of 2018. It has taken some time for the the state government and businesses to officially start offering access to medical marijuana in Missouri, with the very first dispensaries just opening in October of 2020. Medical marijuana in Missouri is now growing steadily and allows patients with a qualifying medical condition to apply for a card to purchase and/or grow the plant, depending on the type of application. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) processes medical cannabis applications.
Missouri’s list of qualifying medical conditions in order to obtain your medical marijuana recommendation, include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, intractable migraines, a chronic medical condition that causes severe, persistent pain or persistent muscle spasms, debilitating psychiatric disorders, a terminal illness and more. You can visit the department’s website for a full list of qualifying conditions.
The first step is to obtain a medical recommendation from a licensed physician or osteopath to document you have a qualifying medical condition that medical marijuana could potentially provide relief. You can even get your medical recommendation from the comfort of your own home through a telemedicine consultation.
After you get your medical recommendation, you will fill out your application for your Missouri medical marijuana patient ID card on the DHSS registry. In addition to your physician’s medical recommendation, which needs to be signed within 30 days prior to submitting your application, you’ll need to submit proof of Missouri residency, a recent and clear photo of yourself, proof of parental/legal guardian for minors, and an indication if you are also applying to cultivate or designate a caregiver to cultivate for you. If you just want to be able to purchase medical marijuana in Missouri, then you don’t have to worry about cultivating.
Once you submit your application, DHSS has 30 days to process it, and they processed in the order received. Once it is officially approved by DHSS, you will be sent a digital ID card to print out as proof of being a medical marijuana patient in Missouri. You’ll need to bring this with you when you go to the dispensary, and have it on you in order for possession of medical marijuana to be legal in Missouri.
